NEW YORK - The Jimmy V Classic is held each year to raise funds for the Jimmy V Foundation, a cancer research organization founded in the name of the late Jim Valvano.Tonight the Panthers (7-2) took on the Indiana Hoosiers (4-4) under second-year Coach Tom Crean. A poor shooting performance (31.9%) limited the Panthers to a very poor game overall.
Ashton Gibbs led all scorers with 25 points, while Brad Wanamaker added 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in the losing effort. Indiana's Christian Watford had a solid game with 16 points, but it was the 22-point effort of Vendell Jones off of the bench that sealed the win for the Hoosiers.
This is just Pittsburgh's second loss of the season, but it comes against a very mediocre Indiana team that was expected to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten. Aside from Gibbs and Wanamaker, it didn't seem like any of the Panthers decided to show up in Madison Square Garden tonight. Jermaine Dixon didn't score, Dwight Miller put in 5, and Travon Woodall added a meager 2 points.
The one positive off of the Panthers bench was Dante Taylor, who scored 12 points and collected 6 rebounds.
Pittsburgh will return home and face off against Kent State on December 12th at 2:00 PM EST.
